The Nuraghe Corvos

In a countryside location much loved by the people of Florinas, there is a complex nuraghe consisting of a main tower and a bastion with two secondary towers (tn* nuraghe: large megalithic, tower-shaped, prehistoric stone structures found in Sardinia, dating from the second millennium BC to the Roman conquest). The nuragic monument was restored in ancient times, either after signs of structural failure of the upper walls or to construct a second floor. The main tower, the most well preserved, has a circular plan and is made of roughly cut limestone blocks of great dimensions at the base. During the successive restoration work, dark trachyte stone was used to overlay the previous limestone rock. The entrance is surmounted by an architrave with two discharging windows with a receding part on the inside. A considerable crack led to the positioning of a support stone at the entrance, thus obstructing it.

Following the internal steps, the upper part of the tower can be reached where there are still a few remains of the upper chamber. The corridor leads to the “tholos” chamber (tn* tholos: false dome), with a slightly compressed plan, made up of stones of decreasing size, carefully laid one over the other. On the sides of the chamber there are three niches arranged to form a cross. The added walls are barely visible except for the south-western side, near the scarp that descends towards the Mannu river, where all the structures stand comprising three layers of stones to a height of 2 metres.
